AGENCY HISTORY

 

  • 1960 founded in Portland, Maine by Richard M. Smith, the Spurwink School was established as a group home for boys with severe emotional problems in the Cape Elizabeth area, home to the Spurwink River.
  • 1982 developed three therapeutic foster homes in Rhode Island
  • 1984  Spurwink School II was incorporated as a RI non-profit corporation.
  • 1986 Spurwink School II move to Lincoln, Rhode Island and opened it’s doors to day students.
  • 1988 Spurwink School II was certified as a provider of residential services for adults with developmental disabilities.
  • 1991 Community Supported Living Arrangements and in-home services developed.
  • 1995 The agency purchased and developed 99 Willow Street, Providence into twelve apartments for adults with developmental diabilites.
  • 1998 The corporation was renamed Spurwink/RI to reflect the evolution of the agency. 
  • 1998 Voc-links Program began to provide supported employment opportunities for the residents of the agency’s community residences.
  • 2003 The agency became certified to offer Home Based Treatment Services.
