Clinical Services
The Spurwink School model seeks to provide a coordinated service package that is an alternative to the often fragmented approach to the existing system of care. This model involves one staff person who is responsible for a student and who becomes accountable for all the systems that interact with the student's life-family, school and community. This person is called a Generalist and is the "glue" that holds together the commitment that each of those entities has made to solve the child's problems. The Generalist enhances communication, reduces confusion in the student's life, incorporates the interventions of the various clinical, educational and social consultants into the process of treatment/programming and maintains a continuity of direction of care for that child.
The Generalist's functions are and may include:
-
· formulating and acting as a facilitator/provider of the child's education and treatment plans
-
· supporting the therapeutic foster parents in maintaining a therapeutic environment
-
· serving as the child's primary advocate
-
· providing home and/or group home visits on a regular basis
-
· case management and case reviews (Imp's, Quarterly progress reviews)
-
· family services
-
· crisis services
-
· Individual Therapy and Group Therapy
Residential Programming
The Spurwink School provides residential treatment to twelve children and adolescents in community-based homes in Johnston, Cumberland, and Lincoln. Two of our three community residences are staffed by live-in ‘house parents'. The residential component provides our children with a normalized, home-like experience. We achieve this by teaching the children and adolescents the skills necessary to function effectively in a less restrictive, community-based living environment. Our ability to individualize the treatment plan for each child enables us to provide intense treatment in specific areas that warrant greater attention. Additionally, our focus on community-based activities provides the opportunity to teach and apply community living skills.
Summer Programming
Each summer, The Spurwink School chooses a theme for the summer program. The theme of the summer program guides staff to unify group activities, academic programs, and field trips into a cohesive unit.
The Generalists conduct therapy groups targeted to the developmental levels of each group and incorporating the summer program theme. Groups focus on problem solving activities in group and individual settings.
Academic programs review learning from the previous academic year incorporating the summer theme and focusing on new learning in creative ways.
Students are exposed to various learning styles including: visual, spatial, naturalistic, kinesthetic and utilizing information about their learning styles to be more productive academically.
Field Trips offer experiential learning opportunities to address issues of autonomy and teamwork. Helping them to challenge their inner insecurities and facilitate their physical and emotional coordination.
School to Career Services/Transitional Services
School to Career and Transitional Services are offered to all age-appropriate students within The Spurwink School with VocLinks to provide such services for either a partial or full school week. Services include tours of local businesses, in-school job readiness skills assessments with local businesses. Individual students also take part in Vocational Evaluations in conjunction with ORS, as appropriate for their age and ability level. Transitional services may also include training and assistance with daily living skills such as banking, money and time management, travel training, cooking, laundry, housing, etc.
